  • Let’s Talk About Frame Rate For A Video

Be it our summer holidays or winter, be it a Sunday or any other weekday, be it just Netflix and chill all day. What's that one thing that makes our holidays fun? I think you got it right! MOVIES and TV SHOWS!!. We love watching movies and TV series all the time but what do we actually do? We watch it, discuss the storyline, how the actors were, how was the dress, set and the list goes on. But do we actually know how the movies are made? No I don’t mean direction or production. I mean how we see the scenes or effects. How do we see all these actors and places moving in a Movie? These are actually possible due to the frame rates. Remember during our childhood years, we had those flip books, where each pad of paper contained an image and when we flipped through the pages in a go, it’d appear as if the pictures were moving. Similarly Frame rate is actually the number of individual images that are displayed per second in a film. In a movie series of still images are viewed in order at a certain speed (at which one wants to show them) known as the frame rate and represented as FPS. Each image represented as a frame so if a video is captured or played at, say, 24 fps, it means each second of the video shows 24 distinct still images, all at once. MIND= #BLOWN!!!! Now one may wonder why to use frame rate? Well frame rate not only impacts the style and viewing experience but it also determines how realistic one wants his video to look. There really isn’t a best frame rate, it as I mentioned, it depends on how you want your work to look but exclusively Movies and TV shows are projected at 24 fps as it is how we see the world around with our personal projectors( our eyes!). It creates a more cinematic aura in the movie and helps us to connect well! Too much high frame rate gives an unrealistic touch to the movies also called Soap Opera Effect (since everything from a falling plate to a man sized serpent in a TV serial is unrealistic). On the other hand too low frame rate can make the video appear blurred and choppy and then Hello Magnifying Glasses because I can’t even see my favourite actress! But if we are recording sports and action scenes we need to use high frame rate as lot is happening and we need to capture it clearly. Say in a movie scene, Flash's (Barry Allen) first 1 km only takes up half fps!! We all now know 24 fps is the standard rate to project the video but earlier the standard rate was 30 fps. There was a complicated reason to choose it which was related to some electrical standards and other mundane reasons that I won’t bore you with. You may ask how many should one use? Well in this case the more isn’t really merrier because the more framed you use, the more time you’d be needing to wrap up! So Tick Tock!! Who doesn’t like a good slow action scene in action movies? Here the director uses high frame rate and a fortune and a Mind! To carefully capture each and every stunt and move. So next time you blink between the movie, you’re missing hundreds of frames! #FrameRate #Movies

  • Animation - Life To Your Imaginations

Do you ever imagine how boring our life would have been if Tom and Jerry would have just stood there on the screen with the audio in the background? What makes it interesting and worth watching is the numerous hours put it by the creators in the form of Animation. It is a method wherein one manipulates pictures to make them appear as if they were moving. Ways to add Animation weren’t always the same. The Traditional way was way different as in 20th century. The images were drawn or painted on paper, one slightly different from the other and then traced on transparent sheets called Celluloid or Cel that are filled with vibrant and different colour tones. Nowadays,(sincere thanks to Walt Disney for saving and savouring our Childhood), most Animations are made with the help of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) which is highly detailed and efficient. It makes the image appear so real that you almost believe that Thanos is snapping his fingers, right in front of you or that Arnold Schwarzenegger is the real Terminator. Now a complex system like this has to be vast and has numerous branches. There are different types of Animation like 3D, 2D, Stop Motion, Motion Graphics and many more. Let's take a look how they are different from each other. 2D Animation 2D or 2 Dimensional animation creates movement in a two-dimensional artistic space, Means no true depth, and no Blobby characters. Just flat and vector looking images. It gives a good overall outlook to the pictures and make them move in definite yet acceptable manner. A big shout out to our Tom and Jerry and Rick & Morty who have an attractive presentation with just the right amount of movement followed by correct audio sequence. Softwares like CelAction, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Animate CC are used by vast group of companies as it is easier to grab and provides more options than basic Animation softwares. Example: Tom and Jerry, Doremon, The Lion King (1994) etc. 3D Animation 3D or 3 Dimensional animation gives us the most realistic movements and scenarios which can almost blow the senses out of us. No one is stranger to Game of Thrones or our too good to be true tales of Cinderella and Snow White. 3D animation gives highly accurate details in the drawings and plausible movement to make it seem lifelike. Though it can be time-consuming because of Rigging, Character Weighting, Texturing, Lighting and the most important and a nightmare for the animator is Rendering. It takes a lot of time and computer power. Software like Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3Ds Max, Blender, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Houdini and Modo are blessing which combines keyframe to animate your own 3D character. Example: Despicable Me, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, How to Train Your Dragon etc. Stop Motion Animation It basically includes providing manual animation to 2D or 3D objects as Paper Cuts, Puppets, Clay etc. It is a technique used to bring static objects to life. It is done by moving the object in increments while filming a frame per increment. The next frame should have the increment data or position of the previous frame. When all the frames are played in a sequence it shows movement. Stop Motion Pro Eclipse and Dragon frame software are powerful enough to easily helps to capture selective movements, composition, light and your own perfect shots, until you're satisfied and then edit the shots with help of advanced editing tools. Icing on the cake is that you can also insert audio and edit it accordingly to how you want your character to sound. Example: Kubo and the Two Strings, Shaun the Sheep, Pingu the Penguin etc. Motion Graphics Motion Graphics create an illusion of movement combined with vector graphics, shapes and keyframes. We can almost say that it breathes still graphics into the animation. Motion Graphics mostly used to create Explainer Videos, Commercial Ads, Text Animation and Logo Intros. Just like 2D animation, it doesn't require highly detailed characters, and an Illustration from Adobe Illustrator or other vector graphics can be easily animated. Softwares like Adobe After Effects, Cinema 4D, Adobe Animate and Moho, Trapcode suit etc are industrial standard software to create motion graphics during post-production of movie, keying, tracking, composting, intros and more. In Short, Animations are extremely essential part of any video or film and can be created in shape of- 2D: It gives a more definite and more easily acceptable effects. 3D: It gives more realistic and lifelike effect to the animation. Stop Motion: It helps us create/design our very own characters manually with the help of clay modeling, puppets etc., And even design their movements. Motion Graphics: It helps in adding life to the still graphics, by editing the movements, keyframe them etc. #Animation

  • Graphic Design: How Much Should You Charge Clients

If you are working as a Graphic Designer or web designer, then the questions come into your mind is that how I should charge for my service or how should I set the working timings etc. Some of the questions that come into Graphic Designer mind while charging their clients are: What should I charge? Should I go for per project rate or hourly billing? Whether my client can afford my fees or not? What is the market rate for this service? Let’s now understand how the charges are set by the freelancer Graphic Designer!!!! Setting Hourly Time or Project Rate As you are a self-employed person, not a salaried person, so you must only concern about your cost, your profitability or how much you want to invest on your business The main advantage for setting the hourly rate is that you are paid for the work you do. To track the time, you can use the time tracking software and you must also have a solid focus while working on your project. Some of the graphic designers don’t find an hourly rate as a good option as because they can finish projects quickly and hours worked is not the only price consideration.. Know Your Actual Profit The profit rate of your deliverable must include the essentials like taxes, rent, lights, transportation, software and other supplies when pricing projects. Such as you should be be able to pay the rent of Adobe Software, such as Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop etc. You need to be able to cover all costs before you’ll ever make any profit as a freelancer graphic designer. You must charge for your service by keeping in mind that you are offering a superior quality product within the specified timeline along with additional provisional costs irrespective of the experienced graphic designer in the market. Miscellaneous Cost Factor If you know all the concepts of graphics and you are sure that you can deliver a superior quality product then, you can charge 30 dollars to 50 dollars per hour. If you are a graphic designer that who is comfortable with just one software, then you can charge between 18 to 20 dollar per hour. The size and time of the project also help in deciding cost that you can charge from the client. You can also decide the cost according to the value of the project you are working on, as designing a logo for a company represents their overall business, hence you can charge at the higher side for the project. It depends on you what parameters are set by you to charge the client according to your freelancer services. Mostly the people around you suggest taking help of the experience freelancer graphic designer. But in my opinion, it is just a waste of time as they will never tell you their actual price and also it is the business question, not an academic one that has to be answered by any experienced designer. #DesigningTips #FreelancerCharges
